THE PRIME RESPONSIBILITY of the Optical Sensing Section is to advance the field of optical remote sensing, especially imaging spectrometry, and to evaluate the use of those methods for Navy needs. In order to do this the Section conducts a program of research into ocean optics, the development of models, methods and algorithms for interpreting remote sensing and in situ optical oceanographic data, and the evaluation of optical data obtained from a variety of sources. By exploiting these techniques, the physical and biological processes operating in the coastal ocean, the marine atmosphere and adjacent land areas are derived and analyzed, and applications of use to Naval operations (especially in the littoral zone) are developed.
